The Hughes Library is the main branch of the Eastern Monroe Public Library. Centrally located at the corner of Route 611 and Chipperfield Drive, the building was formerly the Stroud Jewelers and Distributors building. It was acquired by the library in 1994 and renovated with generous donations from R. Dale Hughes and his family. Total donations from Mr. Hughes and the Hughes Foundation in 1994 totaled over one million dollars. After two years of renovation the library opened on August 31, 1996. The library staff and 150-200 volunteers moved approximately 80,000 library books and items from the library’s old location in a Victorian home at 913 Main Street to the new Hughes Library.
